One of the common questions friends and family have continuously asked me is- how can I read consistently?
I believe some of you that are already used to reading might think it’s no brainer- just pick up a book and read. It can’t be harder than that!
I disagree with the above thought because it’s not everyone that can be easily enticed to read and also enjoy it. Some people even dread the thought of reading any book apart from their school books which they would have avoided if possible.
My aim with this post is to help you with a few tips on how to make reading a consistency in your life and make it enjoyable at the same time.
Pick a book that you will enjoy– As much as you see your friends reading horror, sci-fi, fantasy, action, romance and the likes, don’t try to imitate them rather opt for the genre (book categories) that you feel comfortable reading and will enjoy.
For me, I can’t find myself reading either sci-fi or horror, I prefer fictions about family relationships that have a dose of romance in it because I’m a romantic at heart. Give me any of Umm Zakiyyah’s book, and I’m all ready to dig in because that’s the kind of book I enjoy reading. So, if you give me a book about dragon slayers and the likes, I wouldn’t be curious to read it.
Finding the genre that you love to read will definitely keep the interest to read alive.
Create a ‘To Read Book’ list– Another way to get your juice running for reading is to have a list of books you want to read throughout the year or for a period and then dig in. Tick off each book titles on your list as you read them. It gives you a sense of accomplishment when you go through the list after some months or years and see how far you’ve come.
Create and decorate your reading corner– Who doesn’t want to feel relaxed in a quiet corner while on a cosy, fluffy love seat with legs tucked under and a book in hand with a steaming cup of tea close at hand? It will definitely create a mood for reading. You could use your home office, a library if you have one, by making the place as comfortable as you want. A table and chair with a lamp on the desk for proper lightening and a toss of appealing wall papers or decorations around the area will create the atmosphere for reading.
Read books that you understand– Who needs the headache of using a dictionary just to read a book? It isn’t worth it except when the book is required for school study or project that needs to be done. Stick to books written in simple language familiar to you. I don’t enjoy poems much and to make it worse, when I read poems that require a dictionary to understand, I cringe and give up altogether. But when I read poems with simple and compelling wordings, I fall in love with poems again. If you start reading a book and you can’t understand the meanings from the word go, then dump the book as fast as you can like a burning coal in the hand!
Use the best form of reading method most convenient for you– In this day and age, the paperback book isn’t the only way you can read a book. There is eBook or pdf (soft copy of a book) which you can read off a smartphone or PC. The one I enjoy most is an app called Audible whereby you purchase your book in form of audio. You listen to the book instead of reading it directly. It’s one of the things I love about technology. You get to ‘read’ a lot of books through it. Click here to read a blog post on audible.
I hope you will try the above tips to keep you reading consistently and enjoying it also.
